Our previous blog in this series looked at the definition of InfoSec and highlighted a few of its important roles. Welcome to part two of the series, where we explore the relevance of InfoSec in more depth.

So, Why is InfoSec so Important?

If we consider how important personal and internal information truly is, particularly within corporate entities, the harming of such valuable information can filter straight down to the damaging of an organisation’s reputation, among other factors. If the information pertained from a company’s customers and partnerships is within danger, so too is the honour of that company.

While many SMEs and corporate enterprises consider themselves less prone to being exposed to attacks, they inevitably make themselves a perfect candidate by not getting protection from it. After all, a system or entity that is not protected will inevitably become a target. The attack of such information often means the annulment of many a small business.

Our previous blog mentioned how InfoSec plays four important roles in an organisation:

  • It safeguards the organisation’s ability to function,
  • It enables the safe operation of apps associated with the technology in place,
  • It safeguards the information and data that the organisation uses and gathers; and
  • It protects the technological systems being used at the particular company.

What Are the Top Threats to InfoSec?

Threats tend to circle around corporate entities like vultures waiting on their prey. Therefore, it’s important that the I.T. professionals looking after the security of a company counter these threats on an everyday basis. But what are the main factors which they face when trying to protect such data? Some of them are listed below.

Malware

Malware is an infectious agent which attacks the software applications of a system with a malicious code. The function of that code is to defile and cause harm to the devices and data within an entity.

Vulnerabilities

Hackers tend to target weak spots within an organisation which can aid in successfully making an attack. Some of these vulnerabilities include outdated equipment, lack of knowledge among employees, and unprotected networks.

Systems That Are Down

Systems that are offline are often bad for business. There are certain attacks which affect the normal functioning of these systems, resulting in system crashes which have a negative domino effect on things like the company revenue being affected.

Now that the importance of InfoSec has been highlighted, along with its common enemies, it’s easy to comprehend why corporate enterprises should ensure their data and systems are protected using InfoSec. If you have a business that needs to safeguard sensitive information and data, chat to us and find out how we can assist.
